What is lambskin leather?

Lambskin is the hide of the lamb with the fur left on.  After the removal of the fur the skin is tanned to obtain lambskin leather.

How is lambskin leather identified?

Lambskin leather is the lightest of all types of leathers used for commercial purposes and feels soft and velvety. The pores are clear and evenly spaced.

The smell of lambskin leather

When tanned lambskin leather has minimal or no smell.  Poor quality cheap leather which has been tanned inappropriately often smells of the chemicals or the oils.

The thickness of lambskin leather

Lambskin leather is the thinnest of all the leathers that are used for commercial purposes, and hence is supple and lightweight. Only some extravagant leathers are thinner than lambskin leather.

Softness and lambskin leather

Lambskin is the softest type of leather that is found. It has a light, airy layered structure which makes it exceptionally soft and imparts a velvet-like texture. The suppleness of lambskin leather jacket is something what makes it unique from other leathers.

What is lambskin aniline leather?

Aniline leather is leather that has been dyed all the way through, instead of the dye only applied as a topcoat.  Just a top-coat of the application of dye eliminates natural markings and forms a steady surface; the aniline process conserves the natural markings.  Only the best quality leather is suitable for the aniline treatment.

What is lambskin nappa leather?

Nappa leather is full grain leather that has undergone tanning using a special chemical process. The leather that results holds the beauty of the original hide but is very soft and flexible and does not crease. 

Lambskin leather and goat leather

Lambskin leather and goat leather are alike.  Both are light in weight and are durable, soft and have a fine grain. However, women's lambskin leather jackets is the more preferred leather jacket as compared to goat skin leather jacket.

Lambskin leather and cow leather

Cow leather is the leather that is used most widely, it is thicker and more durable than lambskin leather, but it is not very soft and supple.  Cow leather is used for crafting heavy-duty items such as shoes and large bags.  Lambskin leather is lightweight and is used for chic fashion items and garments.

Faux leather and sheep leather

Faux leathers are an increasingly wide range of substitutes of leather substitutes.  These products there are organic, laboratory grown, leathers that are produced. Faux leather alternatives lack the strength and durability of lambskin leather.

Lambskin and Sheep leather

Lambskin is the leather obtained from a sheep before it is mature and sheep leather is the leather obtained from a matured sheep. They have similar qualities the difference being that lambskin is light in weight, softer and requires prudent handling. 

Production of lambskin leather

Lambskin is tanned to transform it from hide to leather by the process of tanning.  There are two principal ways to do this. The first one is chemical tanning, which is quick and the most widely used commercial process and the other one is vegetable tanning, which is much more environmentally friendly, but takes much longer and is hence more expensive.

Cleaning lambskin Leather

Extreme staining will need a specialist cleaner, but general dirt can be eliminated using corn starch.  Brush lambskin in the direction of the grain with the help of a suede brush.  Apply corn starch generously, and let it stay on for ten minutes and then brush out. Before cleaning a leather jacket, it's advised to test any untried product on a small unnoticeable area first. 

Conditioning of lambskin leather

Do take proper care of your mens lambskin leather jacket as it is essential for its durability & longevity. There are numerous commercial leather conditioners available but because lambskin leather is a soft and is absorbent you should choose a conditioner carefully because not all conditioners will be appropriate. It is advisable that you always test an untried conditioner on an unnoticeable area of the product before going for complete treatment.
